La Bastide des Amouriers is a capacious Provençal Mas (farmhouse) that started its history at the beginning of the 19th century as a multipurpose mansion combining residential dwelling with agricultural functions. Converted into a guest house at the turn of the 20th century, La Bastide stands in four acres of grounds surrounded by countryside and fields on the outskirts of Caumont Sur Durance, a typical small market town a few miles from Avignon.
19th century Provençal Mas
Les Amouriers designates Mulberry trees in local Occitane dialect. Mulberry tree leaves were used to feed silk worms on the countless silk-producing farms that were scattered all over the Vaucluse region in the south-east of France.
In the heart of Provence
Our house’s unique location makes it the perfect gateway to visiting Provence: La Bastide des Amouriers is located merely a short, picturesque drive from Isle sur la Sorgue, an art-oriented town ringed by the cool waters of the Sorgue river, famous
for its vibrant antique market, and an olive milling stone’s roll from the Luberon National Park and its array of authentic, perfectly preserved Provençal villages, most of which remain unchanged since the 19th century.
From La Bastide des Amouriers you can cruise down to Lacoste, up to Gordes or Lourmarin and Saignon. Mosey on to Ménerbes, one of the prettiest villages of France to appreciate the breathtaking views that inspired Peter Mayle to pen “A Year in Provence”. Spend a lazy afternoon in Roussillon and admire its rusty ochre cliffs at sunset. Within half an hour you’ll reach a myriad of hidden and utterly charming Provençal jewels you’ll never want to leave.
Guests can enjoy our ample landscaped garden in any way they please; refresh and regenerate in the swimming pool, gaze into the distance from a sun lounger sheltered by olive trees or contemplate the romantic pond
with its whispering waterfall enhancing the relaxing atmosphere of the grounds. The main south facing terrace is naturally protected from the rays by the imposing, centuries-old plane trees.
Inside the Mas we offer 5 large bed and breakfast rooms, each with its private bathroom and a comfortable two-bedroom apartment with a separate entrance and a voluminous kitchen/living space opening onto the house’s principal terrace and garden.
There is also an independent two-bedroom cottage with a generous size kitchen/living space looking out onto its private, shaded terrace.
The part of La Bastide des Amouriers where we rent the 5 bed and breakfast rooms has its own entrance and a large, high ceiling lounge where guests can rest and recharge after a hot day of sightseeing.
